Cinco Elementos Mezcal Artesenal Joven Tobalá

Refreshing and light mezal

Mezcal Cinco Elementos Tobala is produced from 100% maguey Tobalá (agave Potatorum) in San Lorenzo Albarradas, Oaxaca. “Cinco Elementos” who makes this product, are cooking their i agave in an underground oven – a socalled “Horno de Piedra”. When cooked, the agaves are mashed with a tahona, fermented in pine wood tanks, and then double distilled in copper alembic stills.

Made by third generation mezcaliers, Faustina Garcia and Luiz Martinez, this is an honest and authentic mezcal from Oaxaca with a modern profile and look.

Tasting Notes

This mezcal is rich on apple, grasses and some earthy notes. Smell is refreshing and light. The taste is floral with some fruit and mild sweetness. It is mooth but also holds a mild and creamy feel.

Description

Maguey Tobala (agave potatorum) grows wildly at high altitudes, and its relatively minuscule size yields extremely limited quantities of intensely aromatic mezcal. It has a long growing period (12-15 years), before it reaches maturity. While other agaves grow “hijuelos”, the Tobala grows only from seeds.

The Tobalá has a very distinct taste with an intense aroma of grasses, apple and fruits. Tobalá, which is also sometimes called Papalometl, Biliá, Chato or Monte is expensive, and will probably always be expensive, because it has such a long growning period. Expensive – but deliscious!
