Cinco Elementos Mezcal Artesenal Joven Cuishe
Earth and tobacco – a mans mezcal
Mezcal Cinco Elementos Tepeztate is produced from 100% maguey Cuishe (Agave karwinskii) in San Lorenzo Albarradas, Oaxaca. “Cinco Elementos” who makes this product, are cooking their i agave in an underground oven – a socalled “Horno de Piedra”. When cooked, the agaves are mashed with a tahona, fermented in pine wood tanks, and then double distilled in copper alembic stills.
The Cinco Elementos Mezcal Cuishe is made by third generation mezcaliers, Faustina Garcia and Luiz Martinez. Maguey Cuishe (or Cuixe) is a wild agave in the Karwinskii family and yields intensely flavored mezcal with high minerality and spice notes.
Cuishe is also an agave species taking 13-25 years to mature, so the raw materials for this kind of mezcal are expensive and rare.
Tasting Notes
This mezcal does not have a lot of smoke, but it does have a deep, almost tangible notes of earth, tobacco and grasses. Very usable for drinking neat.
